Gramophone Awards 2011 - Chamber and Recording of the Year Award

“The Pavel Haas Quartet play with plenty of feeling and they also relish the rhythmic cut and thrust of the Molto vivace third movement, capturing to perfection the more relaxed Trio''s sunny spirit. The final opens to a gentle smile then keys up for some dancing exuberance...there''s an abundance of varied drama” Gramophone Magazine, December 2010
Gramophone Awards 2011 - Contemporary Award Winner
“In a welcome if rare excursion into contemporary music, and recorded with tinglingly immediate atmosphere, the Hallé under Ryan Wigglesworth sound on top form throughout” Gramophone Magazine, October 2011
Collegium Vocale Gent
Bach: Motets – Collegium Vocale Gent/Herreweghe

So fast has the early music movement grown that it is difficult to believe that it''s 30 years since Philippe Herreweghe''s fresh-voiced choir first recorded the Bach motets. They now revisit these peerless masterpieces with young voices and a very varied approach to scoring. These days, directors tend to choose between one singer to a part, or a larger choral approach, sometimes doubling voices with instruments; Herreweghe does all three here with different motets. Jesu, meine freude with just five soloists and continuo is perfectly poised, while Singet dem Herrn (which Mozart so revered) and Der Geist hilft burst into life with more singers and instruments. Throughout, Herreweghe achieves a supremely flexible responsiveness to the texts.

Urban - Artists A to Z
FEATURED RECORDINGS
La Coka Nostra - A Brand You Can Trust

La Coka Nostra is a breath of fresh air in these days of contrived airbrushed rap music. LCN isn’t trying to gloss shit up in the least they like it ugly and gritty the way rap music should always be.
Somewhere along the lines people forgot about groups like the mighty Wu-Tang clan or Cypress Hill and the dirty raw esthetic these groups had but LA Coka sure didn’t. They embrace the darkness and the dirt and ain’t afraid to be ugly with it.

2Pac - All eyez on me (explicit version)

Maybe it was his time in prison, or maybe it was simply his signing with Suge Knight's Death Row label. Whatever the case, 2Pac re-emerged hardened and hungry with All Eyez on Me, the first double-disc album of original material in hip-hop history. With all the controversy surrounding him, 2Pac seemingly wanted to throw down a monumental epic whose sheer scope would make it an achievement of itself. But more than that, it's also an unabashed embrace of the gangsta lifestyle, backing off the sober self-recognition of Me Against the World. Sure, there are a few reflective numbers and dead-homiez tributes, but they're much more romanticized this time around.

Juvenile - Beast Mode
NEW ORLEANS HIP HOP ICON JUVENILE IS BACK WITH A NEW ALBUM

Juvenile’s idea of entering beast mode has little to do with ninja-styled lyrics. When Juvy enters beast mode he’s a Dirty South version of Flo Rida offering plentiful hooks and club bangers, but without radio-endorsed folks like Kesha. No glitz, just gutter is the message of the opening Go Hard or Go Home, and with the nasty booty worship of track two being followed by the aggressive machismo/misogyny of track three, Juvy proves he’s proud to frontload his morally reprehensible material. La La La La La shows he’s not without charm, as clever lines (I’m so far ahead it feel like I already been ya) get dropped between the weed boasts (I’m smokin’ that good, I’m smokin’ that kush/You smokin’ that brown, you on that wretched bush), and from here it’s a wild ride through the night, past strip clubs (the Whisper Song-like Pussy Kat), bars (the instant party starter Drinks on Me), and Juvy’s own pad (I’m Da Man), which sounds like a Diddy-meets-Too Short-styled crib.

The Alchemist - Chemical Warfare (Explicit Version)

Previewed heavily on the producer's 2008 EP, The Cookbook, Alchemist's often-delayed album, Chemical Warfare, matches his 2004 release, 1st Infantry, when it comes to both quality control and riveting beats, but fans expecting nothing but that hardcore punch may be alienated by a handful of surprisingly mainstream numbers. With guest singer Maxwell in full neo-soul mode, Smile is the sunshine bright high point of the crossover tracks, with the club-aimed Three 6 Mafia and Juvenile feature That'll Work running a close second. On the flipside there's the underground sound of Gangrene -- Alchemist's project with Oh No -- along with the hypnotic backpacker cut Therapy, which returns from The Cookbook EP, but improved with an added verse from Talib Kweli.

Snoop Doggy Dogg - Doggystyle (explicit version)

If Snoop Dogg's debut, Doggystyle, doesn't seem like a debut, it's because in many ways it's not. Snoop had already debuted as a featured rapper on Dr. Dre's 1992 album, The Chronic, rapping on half of the 16 tracks, including all the hit singles, so it wasn't like he was an unknown force when Doggystyle was released in late 1993. If anything, he was the biggest star in hip-hop, with legions of fans anxiously awaiting new material, and they were the ones who snapped up the album, making it the first debut album to enter the Billboard charts at number one. It wasn't like they were buying an unknown quantity. They knew that the album would essentially be the de facto sequel to The Chronic, providing another round of P-Funk-inspired grooves and languid gangsta and ganja tales, just like Dre's album. Which is exactly what Doggystyle is -- a continuation of The Chronic, with the same production, same aesthetic and themes, and same reliance on guest rappers. The miracle is, it's as good as that record.

Murs & 9th Wonder - Fornever
• Album features: Kurupt, Sick Jacken, Suga Free & Uncle Chucc
• Includes a re-make of Common’s classic “The Problem”

Underground rap stalwart Murs reunites with 9th Wonder for ForNever, the pair’s third collaborative album. The 10-track collection features “I Used To Luv Her,” a remake of Common’s mid-1990s classic, as well as “The Problem Is…”, a powerful examination of the struggle to make an honest living.

Krizz Kaliko - Genius

Mix of Crunk synth and cheeky cock-sure innuendo shows he can compete with Hip Hop’s commercial mainstream

4 Stars – Lead urban review in the current issue of Mojo

# 4 URBAN ALBUM OF THE YEAR – MOJO

Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt. II
Raekwon – “The Chef” is set to release his highly anticipated follow up  to 2003’s “The Lex Diamond story” and sequel to 1995’s platinum selling “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx” – “ONLY BUILT 4 CUBAN LINX II”

The Chef’s influence on Hip Hop as part of the notorious WU TANG CLAN, and as a solo artist in his own right is undeniable.

Tech N9ne - Sickology 101

Having reached the one million total sales mark, Tech N9ne continues to be an impactful force at retail. His new album, the second under the Tech N9ne Collabos imprint, Sickology 101, will prove no different as Tech continues to add to his impressive catalog. Sickology 101 features guest appearances from such notable lyrical heavyweights as Messy Marv, Potluck, Chino XL, Crooked I and Krayzie Bone, as well as Strange Music staples Krizz Kaliko and Kutt Calhoun. In lieu of the ubiquitous mixtape route, Tech N9ne chooses to bring together notable talent on Sickology 101 for original songs like the region-repping “Midwest Choppers 2”, the eye-opening track “Blown Away” and the infectiously soulful “Dysfunctional”.

In 2008, Pollstar ranked Tech N9ne as the 3rd highest grossing rapper behind only Jay-Z and Kanye West, solidifying the fact that Tech N9ne has truly become a force to be reckoned with in the touring world

In 2003, the album was ranked number 137 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
